About the Region

The Central Region is located along the coastlines of Ghana with Cape Coast as the regional capital.
The Region is governed by a regional administration of which the Regional Minister is the Head with the deputy regional minister as his assistant.
The Size of the Region is about 9826 square kilometers with a population of 1,661,500 as in 2002.
The vegetation of the region is mostly covered with evergreen forest but much of the region, especially towards the coast has been cut and now consists more of savannah grasslands.
As in the year 2000, 28,700 acres of the region was used for oil palm production.
The dominate ethnic group in the region is the Akans of which we have the Fantis , Akwamu , Assin, Denkyira and the Twifo’s . Another ethnic group that can be found in the region is the Awutu’s.
The prominent occupation among those living along the coast is fishing and those in mainland is meanly farming and small scale craftsmanship.
Each community in the region has its own unique festivals among which are the Fetu Ahafye - Cape Coast , Edina Bakatue – Elmina, Abokyir – Winneba’s etc.

The Region is blessed with numerous tourist attractions which includes Stretch of Palm fringed beaches, Castles and forts, National Parks, Crafts and fishing villages and other interesting places that tourist can come and visit
